W3C develops web standards and guidelines.
Since 1994, W3C has published more than ninety Web Standards and Guidelines called W3C Recommendations.
This helps to ensure that all the fundamental web systems (email, browsers, etc) are compatible,
avoiding market fragmentation. W3C refers to this goal as "Web interoperability."
W3C Recommendations underpin all our website work and ensure our websites can be accessed by the widest possible audience.
W3C also engages in education and outreach, develops software, and serves as an open forum for discussion about the web.
